Tudor Court Hand Will 1524 - Need help with Names of Places
« on: Tuesday 19 March 24 21:18 GMT (UK) »
Hi, Rootschatters,

I have all of this Will transcribed but need help with 3 words and the heavily abbreviated and badly written probate clause.  I've added the 3 snippets.  The words I need help with are highlighted in yellow.

Thank you for any and all assistance.

Clip 1
I think the first highlighted word could be Skynneres. Or Stynneres ?

Hi, Bookbox,

Thank you.  I think you are right with Skynneres.  I had the "S..y" and the "eres" but couldn't grasp what the minims in the middle were representing.  I also couldn't see the "k" until your suggestion but see it now.

Greatly appreciated.

Any idea on the second word in clip 1?  I have "Crospiaell", which makes no sense to me.

Hi, Bookbox,

Yes, re Clip 2.  You are right.  Executrice it is.  I was reading it as Executores but that made no sense with the rest of the sentence "...occupyeng or entremedlyng as...".

Many thanks.  Greatly appreciated.

Any idea on the second word in clip 1?  I have "Crospiaell", which makes no sense to me.

I'm wondering if it's an unusual spelling of 'Hospital', perhaps Orspittell, or similar, but I'm not convinced the first letter is O.

In the probate clause, it’s proved at Ipswich, and the year (at the end of line 1) could be 1525 (but can that be checked in the archive catalogue?)

Last line – iuratis &c, going with executoribus no(m)i(n)atis in line 2.
Then I think it's - & sol(vit) (= and he/she paid)
Then there’s an amount of money at the end [?] s (shillings) and iiij d (fourpence). Probably the probate fee.

Still puzzling over the beginning of line 2 of this probate clause.

On reflection, I think this is - & co(mmissa) f(uit) ad(ministracio) executoribus …

Nor am I.  Can we please see the whole of the word which is cut off at the end of line 2 in Clip 1?  It looks to begin with the same letter.

Regarding Skynner(es), I'm struggling to see a k when it is compared to s(ir) John Awdeley knyghte and what I think is mast(er) Edmonde Bokkyng.
