Brechfa, Welsh cottage name help please
« on: Wednesday 20 March 24 03:09 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Could anyone make out  what the cottage name at number 26  reads? .
It  looks to me as if it says "gwau ( or n) malchnai", but that doesn't  make much sense.

Refs for the whole census page:

Registration district   Llandilofawr
Sub-registration district   Llanfynydd
ED, institution, or vessel   6
Household schedule number   26
Piece   4128
Folio   62
Page number   6
Kind regards

Ps the closest I can  get to  the name is Gwalchmai , but it doesn't  look a bit like that to me. Unless the enumerator had difficulty transcribing the cottage Welsh names into his books(?)
Kind regards

I can't help with the name, however the previous entry on the cesus is Brynteg Farm and before that LLwyn celyn Farm which you can see on this 1886 map. So presumably the cottages are somewhere in this vicinity, probably towards the town of Brechfa itself.

Possibly Waun-mwyalchen? (Though the writing on the census doesn't quite look like this.)

Thank you so much  Maddy .

I think maybe the enumerator has more than likely  transcribed the  spelling of the cottage name down incorrectly, as it's  such an odd looking word whatever he has written .  I'll  possibly never know what it should read.  I agree it looks very much like the cottage was ( or is)  in that vicinity.
Kind regards
