possible industrial accident 1926
« on: Wednesday 20 March 24 15:47 GMT (UK) »
hi
My grandad John Watson Doughty of Cockermouth had an accident in 1926 and lost half a leg.  I know it was this year as my Auntie was born and he got to choose her name as he was still in hospital recovering.  I know that he went on to work at Jennings and Millers shoe factory in Cockermouth and became a lollipop man when I was a small child.

Any help will be gratefully received  as I live away from Cumbria and have done limited searches in the local newspapers.  To be honest, i think something like this would have been reported.

Hi, welcome to Rootschat. I’m surprised no-one has replied to this! I’ve been searching BNA and not found anything.

Have you any idea what his job was at the time of his accident?

It may not have been anything to do with his job but a road accident or a fall etc.

Not all accidents like those were reported but I can see how a job related one may have been.

As the accident happened in 1926, its probably better to search the microfilm of the newspapers.  There isn't much  online for north Cumberland for this time period.

As his daughter Edith was born in 3rd quarter of 1926, it would probably be good to know Edith's date of birth, this might help narrow the search period, if anything was reported in the papers. Carlisle Library has microfilm newpapers from this time. Whitehaven Archives and/or Whitehaven Library will also have copies of the local newspapers.

In 1921, he was a carter for a coal merchant and, in 1939, a quarry works stone loader.

Quite a lot of trees on Ancestry, but I can't see any mentioning an accident. Edith was born on 11th July 1926 in Cockermouth.

Frank Doughty was living in Garnett Terrace, York in the 1921 census, so not this man.

....in 1939, a quarry works stone loader.

It might depend on how mechanised the quarry was, but that seems a bit unlikely for someone who'd lost part of a leg.
