Witness' first name on marriage certificate
« on: Wednesday 20 March 24 17:40 GMT (UK) »
I'm having trouble making out the first name of this witness on a marriage certificate.  The first letter appears to be an 'H' which matches other names on the same page.

Thank you in advance for your time and effort.

First of all, welcome to Rootschat.

Can you tell us a bit more about where the writing comes from please

Who
when
where ie what church?

This is so we can place the names in context eg the RC church often used the latin forms of first names

Giving a bigger 'slice' from the register will help us look at how the writer forms the letters.

The second one looks like Fidelis or Fidel sp Fedalis

Fidelis is Latin and means faithful.

The first looks a little like Hycia or Alycia?  Again, sometimes, the H is sounded in the vernacular, but the name may have been Alycia sounded Haylicia, by the person rehistering or writing the entry.  A form of Alice

'Other Origin(s):Hebrew. Meaning:Noble; God is my salvation. Elicia is a feminine name with German and Hebrew roots. A variant spelling of Alicia and Alice, this name translates to “noble,”'

The marriage of my Great Grandparents was celebrated 4 July 1871.  They lived in Kings County Prince Edward Island.  Their children were baptized in St Charles Roman Catholic Church.  I can't find records of Mary MacDonald's parents and am hoping to find out more about the witness whose first name I can't read.

Thank you very much for your time and attention.  The information about 'Alycia' should prove invaluable.
