HENRY FOTHERGILL, Attorney
« on: Friday 22 March 24 18:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi, has anyone come across this HENRY FOTHERGILL, birth date and place unknown, an Attorney of Bedford Row, Gray's Inn, London, who married 1st Mary Foster at St Andrews, Holborn on 22nd Jan 1729 and subsequently married my ancestor Mary Angelica Peters at St Anne and St Agnes, Gresham Street, London in 1735. Henry Fothergill died in 1795 and was buried at St Andrews, Holborn, London and I have his will. He appears to have had connections to Shap, Westmorland.

Any help or information would be hugely appreciated.

Alistair

If he had connections to Shap, Westmorland, then perhaps this chap?

Henry, son of Henry Fothergill, baptised 15th August 1709 in Shap, Westmorland.

The 1694 baptism would make him 101 at death, which, though not impossible, seems unlikely. This one would make him 86.

May I ask what evidence you have that points to Shap?

That sounds better - I didn’t notice the death.

If my baptism is correct, then this looks like the family tombstone in Shap containing Henry's mother, father, brother and grandfather:

Seems like a wonderful family to research; there's so much out there!

Thank you for all the replies thus far.

This Henry Fothergill's connection to Shap is presumed because his stepson, the son of his wife, Mary Angelica, nee Peters, was George Peters who for 30 years was Director or Governor of the Bank of England and a wealthy Russia Merchant who died in 1797. In his Will George Peters leaves minor bequests to two people in Shap. Also, Kendall Library holds a letter written by George Peters to George Browne of Troutbeck telling him of Henry Fothergill's death in 1795.

In passing, this George Browne, served an apprenticeship in 1764 under Henry Fothergill, Solicitor of London, and Thomas Atkinson, Solicitor, of Kendall.
