 James and Mary both gave their age as 29 in June 1858 when they arrived.
 Jame indicated that he had a brother Patrick , already in Australia. Possibly older.
    James gave that his parents James and Mary were both dead in 1858

                If James and Mary's son Patrick Gearn was born in Ireland about 1855 , wouldn't he be recorded in the Official Ireland Births ?

Civil birth registration did not begin until 1864, unfortunately.

              That certainly looks as if it is James' brother Patrick that was already in Australia by the
time James arrived in 1858 .
Yes I see that there is a spelling variation too. It must have been a name that the officials had trouble with. They were certainly Gearn in Austarlia
