James Sansum Chandler, Windsor NSW, d.1871
« on: Saturday 23 March 24 23:34 GMT (UK) »
James S. Chandler, originally from Stroud, died in Windsor, NSW in 1871. Some suggest his middle name was 'Sansum' (his parents are possibly Enoch Chandler and Lois Chandler nιe Sansum) but I cannot find any documentary evidence that this was his middle name.

Does anyone have any evidence that James's middle name was 'Sansum'?

Does anyone have any proof of when James arrived in Australia from England?

I have a lot of other info on James and his family, I'm only looking for new info on his middle name and arrival. Thanks.

According to birth records of his children, James was born 1814-1817 in Nailsworth / Minchinhampton area of Gloucestershire.
He was a carpenter. When he married in 1859 NSW to Esther he was a widower.

These details are needed to try to help trace him further.

There is certainly a marriage in Minchinhampton in 1802 for Enoch Chandler to Lois Sansum.
This marriage has some potential, especially since one witness was James Sansum (Lois' father).

Records for this family seem to be non-conformist.

There is a James Chandler sentenced to transportation for life at Bristol sessions 4 April 1836. Age 23.

Added…the previous year 1835 a James Chandler was sentenced to death for breaking open the house of Ann Brown of Minchinhampton and burgling.  Register says commuted to life, so it might be the same man.

There is a James Sansom Chandler who married Matilda Roe in 1870.

Thank you to everyone for your input, the BMD records of James's children do indeed confirm his middle name was 'Sampson' and that he was from Nailsworth / Minchinhampton.

Just need to figure out how he got to Australia.
