Latin tomb inscription
« on: Sunday 24 March 24 00:43 GMT (UK) »
Could some kind person help me with this inscription:

Conditur hic Miles Robertus nomine Manfelde
Aulicus effulgens Henrici tempore quinti
Qui varios subiit summo pro rege labores
Dum Gallos et Normannos per bella domabat
Armiger ac quartus H. pro tutamine sexti
Extitit electus dum mors in funera traxit

I assume H. refers to Henry IV

Thanks in advance.

One of the experts will no doubt be along and improve upon this but my attempt is

Found here a knight named Robert Manfelde
A (something like shining) courtier of the time of Henry V
He undertook various labours for the King
He subdued the Gauls & Normans in battle

That next bit I am not sure of.
But is it saying Henry IV granted his arms, and his service continued to Henry VI in whose service he was when he died?

I think quartus is meant in the heraldic sense, but I suspect it is a deliberate double entendre, echoing quinti and sexti.

I suggest:

A knight with quartered arms he rose, for the protection of Henry the sixth, chosen while death led him to the grave.

Postscript:

By the way, it is Henry V, not Robert, who tamed the Gauls and Normans through battles.

Not knowing any latin I tried a translation with Copilot, which will obviously need some tweaks:

Here lies the knight Robert by the name of Manfelde
A courtier shining during the time of Henry the Fifth
Who undertook various labours for the supreme king
While he was subduing the French and Normans through wars
A squire and the fourth H. for the protection of the sixth
He was chosen until death drew him into funerals.

Ah, you mean he became an undertaker.

I also strongly disagree with the translation "A squire and the fourth H.", for the reasons given in my first post.

That's fine and it shows the downside of using AI! I did put my hands up and say I knew no latin and had tried Copilot simply to see what it came up with…

Thanks, manukarik.  I didn't mean to be unfriendly.  We have excellent Latin expertise in the group.
