« on: Sunday 24 March 24 11:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi folk's I wonder if I could trouble anyone visiting Newcastle library to look up an obituary for 13th july 1903 for James Smith I suspect a resident of Alnwick. We recently had confirmation he was my
Gtx2 Grandfathers brother born in Buckinghamshire c1827  but after a long army career ended up
in Alnwick at the end of the 1800's.
TIA Steve Smith.

Death of an Indian Mutiny Veteran
On Thursday Colour Sergeant late of the 1st Battalion 5th Northumberland Fusiliers died at Alnwick. He was 74 years of age. He joined the "Old and Bold" at Aylesbury in October 1846. He served in the Indian Mutiny and was present at the relief of Lucknow. In 1868 he retired on pension after 21 years of service. The deceased subsequently became an instructor of the then 3rd Northumberland Fusiliers
(Militia) and in that capacity took up his abode at Alnwick. He retired from the Militia having served close upon 15 years.
