John Megan
« on: Sunday 24 March 24 12:04 GMT (UK) »
Hello. I can only find one record for John Megan and Ellen Salmon who were married at St.Michans church, Dublin. 1871. John’s parents were James and Bridget, Ellen’s John and Ellen. John’s residence Richmond Barracks, Ellen’s 18 Pill Lane, Dublin.
If anyone can find out baptism’s or census info that would be very helpful thanks.

Here is the civil record.

Is Ellen your connection?
Presumably you don’t know if they had children or where John came from?

Here is the parish record.

It indicates that John’s father is dead and mother in West Bromwich - do you think it says that?

If you think this may be your interest, I can’t find civil births for the children.
However, FindMyPast has Catholic baptism records for:
John Mugan - 1845
Matthew Meegan - 1848

You might want to check them and search for others.

Thanks Heywood,
That could be them. The residential entry for Bridget looks to me like Hotel W…th..ich ?
I researched this tree for a friend who asked me to try the Megan side again as I couldn’t even get started last time. Irish genealogy isn’t my strongest point. I thought I’d kept a note of the connection to the descendant but can’t seem to find it so far. There should be a link to Portsmouth/Gosport at the more recent end.

It is Latin and says ‘Mater’

Did the family keep the Megan surname?

Yes mater. That makes sense thanks. I found a tree on Ancestry that seems to have them and has a second marriage for Ellen to Arthur Tomes and in 1871 they are in Portsmouth. Ellen’s birthplace is Dublin.
