Walter had a brother, younger by 4 years according to English census 1841.

I wonder if this could be him dying in 1897. He had lived in the Mt Ida area and was a miner.
He is referred to as very old and was born in Salford, Lancashire.

Hi Sparrett,

That certainly looks a brother.

A J. PENKETH arrived at Port Chalmers from Melbourne per the City of Hobart in 1864. Single.

I can't find a NZ marriage for him, though.

He appears in the Otago Nominal Index from 1867-1886 inclusive living at Hamilton's, Mt Ida.

The article  does say he sent his wife "home"

I am going to assume that means  England.

That could  suppose mean she was an English woman originally who married John after her immigration.

Or it could mean the marriage took place in England at a time they were both there.

Just as a comparison against the passenger Walter PENKETH who travelled from VIC AUS to Otago per Genii in 1861, I've found a 'maybe' in a W. PINKADE aged 29 from travelled the same route in 1863 per Aldinga.

Hi BAC3,

In an earlier post I mentioned Hokitika Museum. Can I suggest that you email them in case they are open and can assist you.
https://www.hokitikamuseum.nz/contact-the-museum/

I visited them some years ago. They were very helpful.

It seems reasonable to suppose that John was Walter PENKETH's younger brother, from the age, birth place and so on......thank you for the research.  Of course, there is the older brother, Alfred, who accompanied Walter's return to Melbourne from England in 1863.   He seems to have conveniently gone missing too.

Incidentally, I have managed to confirm that Walter left Albany, WA, aboard the schooner Coila and disembarked in Melbourne on 05/12/1853.   He had been awarded a Conditional Pardon the previous September.

Everyone's help is appreciated

BAC3

1863 arrived Melbourne per Morning Light from Liverpool, born about 1831 (as Walter Penketh) and under the same number 4499 - Alfred Penketh 36y; Hughes family, James 25y, Ann 25y, Eliza infant, John 41y, Ann 15y

Above..From a previous thread.

Alfred was a plasterer born 1828 Salford, Lancashire.
He married Mary WALSH in Salford in 1848 and had a number of children.

He is present on the 1861 England census with wife and family.

It appears he travelled with Walter to Australia on Walter's 1863 return trip, leaving his family behind in Salford.

By the 1871 census he is back with wife and family in Lancashire.

Perhaps a reconnoitre which proved unsuitable for him or not to his liking, or something like that.
