Rev. William John Powell
« on: Monday 25 March 24 16:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to find reference to Rev. William John Powell, whom I think may have been an Army chaplain in India or South Africa c.1900.

Does anyone know if there is an index of Army Chaplains serving abroad, please?

Thanks,

Gordon

Try Crockfords Clerical Directories - available on Ancestry. This will list any Church of England clergy.

If he was an army chaplain he might be in the Army List of the time.

Can you offer any other information on Rev William John Powell.  Birth, age, parents  etc., ?

Thanks for your reply.

There was a son of the same name as his father: William John Powell, born about 1906 - based on age 42 on his marriage certificate.

There does not seem to be a UK record that matches the above.

You could try the Royal Army Chaplains' Museum. They have a Facebook page but I can't quickly find a website.

Correction to my previous answer;

The son born about 1906 was William JAMES Powell

Did the Rev Powell have a connection to Australia in the 1930s to 1940s?

Someone with his name is mentioned in the "Mrs Richards Found Not Guilty" article.

ADDED: Here's a 1945 obit. Age 58. Probably too young for the OP's fellow.

The only refernce to the death of William James Powell, that I have seen is 1953 in Croydon, Surrey. This is clearly wrong, as his youngest child was born in 1956 in Croydon, Surrey (wife's maiden name was Holt).

He was born c1906, from his marriage certificate. His death would be between 1955 and 1972, when his wife, Edna J Powell, married a Mr Collins.
