The link that SS has added to a family tree takes William John James Powell's ancestry in a different direction. Parents showing as John Joseph Powell and Elizabeth Welford, with the family residing in the Croydon area.

Gordon, do you have a copy of the 1948 marriage cert? As Sandra asked earlier, what was William John's marital status when he married? Witnesses's names?

I'm not convinced the tree on An* is fully correct re William Powell. We certainly do appear to have found his death in 1953.

1939 war register records a William Powell dob 19.04.1902 with a wife and 3 Powell/Haigh children. Living  2 doors away is his brother John (Maurice) Powell(1900)with wife.

That looks good SS.
And I think lends weight to the assumption that the William Powell of that family did not marry Edna Joan Holt.

Hoping Gordon comes back to tell us who the witnesses were for the Holt/Powell wedding.

Hi,

I am trying to find reference to Rev. William John Powell, whom I think may have been an Army chaplain in India or South Africa c.1900.

Does anyone know if there is an index of Army Chaplains serving abroad, please?

Thanks,

Gordon

Its still a bit of a mystery this thread. Loads of questions come to mind ?

Was there enough information to positively identify Rev William John Powell in 1892 Chepstow ?
What other details does it show ?

Mystified how you know that Rev William John Powell had a son William James Powell in 1906 ?   Do you know the wife of the Rev William John Powell ?

Normally people are searching backwards step by step but you seem to have started further down the line, working the opposite way ?

Is this a relative of yours and is this the connection to your Gt Gt Uncle James Johnson born 1881 Alvington Gloucestershire who most likely served in South Africa, Boer War. The Somerset Light Infantry 1898 -1904. Army record has birthplace as Caldecot, Near Chepstow, Mons., where his family lived.  (deceased RootsChatter Max was one of the volunteers who helped you to unravel James Johnson in South Africa.  (Perhaps this indicates that the Rev William John Powell was in South Africa at the same time)

Did Rev William John Powell (the Army Chaplin) serve with your Gt Gt Uncle James Johnson in South Africa ?

Your James Johnson married Beatrice Love Oliver, Walsall 6b 1139 - registered December 1908 quarter)  Did Rev William John Powell officiate at that ceremony ?

Very generous of Softly Softly to download the death certificate of the William James Powell who married Edna Joan Holt and who is spoken of in many replies.

Still many ambiguity's and unanswered questions to solve the mystery of the correct William James Powell  ???

I double checked the Army List for 1900 and there were no chaplains named Powell at that time.

That is a mystery but then also was the statement that on the marriage his father was a "clerk in Holy Orders"  ??  Really strange.

There are no BMD details for Rev. William John Powell, I'm afraid.

Given that his son was born c1906, a sensible estimate for his birth might be 1875 to 1880.

Possibly in the Monmouthshire area, as above.

Gordon

This guesstimate of the age of Rev William John Powell is a concern.  If he was a Reverend in 1892 ??
