I am trying to find reference to Rev. William John Powell, whom I think may have been an Army chaplain in India or South Africa c.1900.

Do you have any details for him at all? Birthplace and year, marriage, death, etc?

As to whether Rev William John Powell was linked to Australia, I have no idea, sorry.

The Rev. William John Powell is closely connected to a family with the surname Johnson, which lived in Monmouthshire (around Newport and Chepstow). He might well have known someone with the Richards surname, which would be common in those parts.

There are no BMD details for Rev. William John Powell, I'm afraid.

Given that his son was born c1906, a sensible estimate for his birth might be 1875 to 1880.

Possibly in the Monmouthshire area, as above.

And what is the source of Rev Powell being an Army chaplain in India or South Africa c.1900?

The family has definite links to both India and South Africa, with military connections.

The son's marriage certificate says that his father was a "clerk in holy orders".

Have you checked Find My Past? There's a Clergy List 1896 collection which lists a Wm Powell.  I don't have a FindMyPast sub, so I can't view the record.

Other than a marriage record, do you have any birth details for the son William James Powell (besides a circa 1906 year of birth)? Do you know his birthplace and/or mother's maiden name?

Do you have the father or son in any census records?

The only refernce to the death of William James Powell, that I have seen is 1953 in Croydon, Surrey. This is clearly wrong, as his youngest child was born in 1956 in Croydon, Surrey (wife's maiden name was Holt).

He was born c1906, from his marriage certificate. His death would be between 1955 and 1972, when his wife, Edna J Powell, married a Mr Collins.

This doesn't look like your man.

William J Powell born 1903 who passed away in Croydon in 1953 was William/Willie JOHN Powell.
It appears his father was John Joseph Powell.  William married  Edna Joan Holt 1948 Camberwell. London. Edna Joan Powell born 6 March 1917 married Edward J Collins in 1972  Croydon. Edna J Collins passed away March 1998 Bexley. Greater London. (aged 81 years) Cremated Greenwich. London.

Was it Williams first marriage ? Where did the marriage take place ? What was his occupation ?
What was the address at the time ?

Can you attach the marriage certificate. ?

That 1953 Death record is clearly not he man who married Edna Joan Holt.

At the moment, the 1948 marriage record is the only correct factual reference that involves the right people
