Sorry taking so long to get back.

I have made no progress in finding William James Powell (c1906 - ), or his father, The Rev. William John Powell.

I have established that a Rev. William Powell was the minister at the Methodist church in Chepstow in 1893, but only in that year. I have enquired of the church if they have any further information on that gentleman, but do not expect a reply until after the Easter holiday.

The names of the witnesses to the 1948 marriage are V.D. Holt and William Cocklin.

Hi Gordon,

RootsChat has a no living person rule so all the current names you have listed would need to be removed as they are hopefully still living.

Have made a note of them and will have a look to see what we can find out.

Regards
Sandra

Gordon, Is that not the death in 1953 of William James Powell who married Edna Joan Holt?

Yes, I think this 1953 death is the death of the man who Married Edna in 1948.

The age given is 50, which would put his birth earlier than implied from the marriage certificate.

It could then be as early as 1902. if his birthday was later in 1953.

So, I am looking for William James Powell's birth in the range 1902 to 1906, with father William John Powell. who is suspected to be an Anglican churchman.

Where does the Rev William Powell and son come into this ?

Could the connection not be down the Bruce line ?

There are about a dozen shared matches and all have strong links to the Johnson family.

If Ancestry's prediction that my DNA match is a 3rd cousin is correct, then it would be likely that William James  Powell's mother was either Jane Johnson, who was born in 1867 at North Leigh, Oxfordshire, or Eliza Johnson, who was born at Littleton, Worcestershire in 1873.

Only because you have mentioned South Africa as a possible - this might be of interest.

Maybe you are exploring the wrong DNA line  :-\   Feel sure someone would be able to answer that one.

Will post this anyway.

Not into DNA myself but the strong link you quote (WJB) was the grandson of Raymond Bruce who was born 4 July 1912 (can't find a UK birth for him)
Raymond married in Croydon in 1937 to Elsie Walker, both born 1912.

Raymond Bruce appears on a UK incoming passenger list 22 October 1949 departing Durban South Africa to Southampton on the Durban Castle - his address given was 56 Montacute Rd. Addington. Croydon.

Raymond's occupation was carpenter.
