Thank you for your help. I have all this information on Richard Pincock. The question arose when he gave his father's name at his marriage, as Roger Thompson. With alot of research over a  long period of time I have established that Richard's parents were Roger Thompson and Mary Pincock. In order to proceed with more generations, I am seeking help in trying to discover Mary's parents and anything about her life and whereabouts. I have found Roger living with his sister on 1841 and 1851 Census. In 1838 Richard must have known of his father to give a name to the registrar. Still searching for any info regarding Roger's parents, possibly Thomas and Jane from Euxton, Lancs.

Thank you for the new information. It is very helpful. Where did you find Mary's baptism?

I am looking at a scan of the Euxton parish register (available on both of the main family history subscription sites):

"Mary, daughter of Richard and Ann Pincock of Euxton, baptised the 5th of May [1776]"

Transcription can be viewed here:

Thank you looking up this information. Am just contemplating how likely it is that Richard was 12 years younger than Mary when he fathered her child...  ???
I have found Roger living with his sister Jane and 3 of her illegitimate children!

I assume you meant Roger, so I changed it.

Just my opinion, but I don't think people were as preoccupied with their age as we are now. I mean, I assume people had a general idea of when they were born, but I'm not sure they really would have cared that much. I mean, he was a man and she was a woman (not wanting to be crude!)  ;D

I suppose we may never know for certain, unless there is DNA evidence. However, I don't really see any other options for her baptism and there is also the Richard connection.

Oh, goodness knows  ??? A pity there is no age. Of course the further back we go, I am less confident. Unless there are other cross references available then guess work becomes involved. Up to now I have only recorded members of my family tree where I am 99.9% certain.

Hmm... certainly throws a spanner in the works.

Only other baptisms I can see in Lancashire are these, both in Leyland:

Mary, daughter of Adam and Mary Pincock of Euxton on 21st January 1776.

Mary, daughter of Robert and Ellen Pincock of Euxton on 3rd April 1796 - this one would make her only 16 when Richard was born.

If only we had a better idea of her age. Shame the burial does not give an age either.
