Yay...the death certificate! The age certainly matches. Interesting that a cousin (H Masbach) in Germany was the informant. Although the 1896 marriage record indicates SG was from Austria.  ???
Its absolutely baffling me!

Added - sorry I missed your last post
Thank you Kay.
Much appreciated

This was from FindMyPast - on Anc he is transcribed as Silgruand Isutman.   Checked the original on Scotlands People and  although it is badly written it does look like Siegmund Gutman

Its absolutely baffling me!

Perhaps Siegmund had close ties to his German family (and visited often).  I wonder if H Masbach was coincidentally in England at the time of Siegmund’s death?

While I’ve not looked at too many American marriage records, I have noticed a few “errors” in American census returns for birthplaces, especially for Germany.

Added: great finds, everyone!

A possible for the cousin is a Herman Masbach, born 1863 in Germany. He's also a Merchant. He's in the 1881 (Islington) and 1891 (Manchester) census reports.

As per the 1902 death cert, Herman's residence is Mayence on Rhine (aka Mainz). It's the largest wine producing region in Germany.

Thank you so much for that.
Yes everyone has been super helpful. I'm not familiar with searching for anything outside of England so I'm forever grateful to everyone
