Digital Maps
« on: Wednesday 27 March 24 12:06 GMT (UK) »

Hi - does anyone have experience of using digital maps to chart movement please?  I use Family Historian which has geo-mapping and of course there's Google maps but are there any other options?  I'm not greatly tech-savvy and want to keep things simple and digital.  Any ideas please?

Library of Scotland has a comprehensive series of maps
dating back to the 1840's in some cases:

Zoom in on the place you want to look at & click on the square it's in, this
will give you a selection of maps going back in time.

Yes I use that all the time.

I find the area of interest, zoom in, take a screen shot, save as a jpg and then add overlays (e.g. coloured polygons of buildings or streets) using Affinity Designer. I sometimes overlay the present day satellite map with an opacity of about 60% too.

Thanks both! Totally agree, that site is excellent and I can pass a lot of time rooting around looking at different places.

And thank you also for the tip about layers - I'm going to need YouTube to show me how of course  ;D ;D ;D

There used to be a site called History Pin with which you could create online timelines, with marking locations. It was mostly for the location of historic images, but I think you could maybe see if it might work. There may be other online timeline sites available too, but that's one I have actually used though it was a long time ago so it may have changed!
