It looks as though Frederick James and Charles Henry are siblings.
1881 4908 /65/39

Frederick H and Hannah Stephens with several children including Frederick and Charles.
They have a sister, Sarah, too.

"It looks as though Frederick James and Charles Henry are siblings.

Well, that's quite a development. I did wonder about that. The target for the investigation was one of those very vague memories of a person who was "a bit of a character" but I had very little concrete information to go on. My primary source, as I said, was the son of Reuben Stephens who is also my brother-in-law. He could recall his Dad, Reuben, & other family members talking about "Aunty Hilda" who had done well in life & possibly owned hairdressing shops possibly in central London. He vaguely remembered his Dad, Reuben, going to "Aunty Hilda's" funeral/wake possibly in central London & being disturbed by the avaricious behaviour of other relatives, presumably she was well off & had nice possessions. The wake/funeral he thinks happened in the early 50s, possibly in central London when he would have been 7/8/9. But he really isn't sure about any of this. In the light of this it's very interesting to note that "Charles H & Dorothy A Stephens who lived in Hartlepool in 1901 with daughter, Sarah 3 yrs and two other children" had a child called Hilda. If this is the target "Aunty Hilda" (no guarantees) then she wasn't an aunty to my primary source but was a great-aunt I believe, ie. his Dad's aunty. I'll see if I can find out any more about her. It's tempting to leap at these things when they come up.

Looking at a published tree, which are not always reliable, that Hilda married Henry Cambell Cooper and seemed to stay in the north.
There are supporting records there.

Thanks for this. I don't know what these reference numbers mean or how to use them. I understand this is a reference to the 1881 Census. I have subscriptions to Findmypast & Ancestry. Can I enter these reference numbers somewhere to find the family?

Sorry, yes you can search by that.
They are piece/folio;page.

You can search by name or if you open 1881 England page, and scroll down you can see the relevant boxes.
I just tried and entered a wrong number! It works though with the right ones onAnc.

So the piece is 4908, the folio is 65 and the page is 39. Is that correct?

From Free Index
Cemetery Registers
District Hartlepool
Year 1901
Name Sarah Stephens
Birth year abt 1897
Abode 21 Watt Street

Searching with Frederick and Ellen as the parents names also brings her up, so that info must also have been recorded. Transcripts cost £1.50
