Jane Law (Elliot/Batty) in Canada?
« on: Friday 29 March 24 15:54 GMT (UK) »
Hi I am not sure if this is the correct location for this as it concerns ancestors that although born in St Luke's London might have ended up in Canada?

So here goes Jane Law born approx 1864 (although the birth was seemingly never registered) was the daughter of Esther Jones who married my 2nd Great Grandfather Samual Buckley.

Jane was married twice first to Charles Elliot b1864 and had 6 children by him then bigamously to Joseph Richard Batty b1864 and went on to have 2 children by him. Jane lost both the children with Richard Batty and 1 son Silvanous b1885 by Charles Elliot. After appearing on the 1901 census she and her remaining children seem to disappear after 1905.

Charles Robert Elliott  b1886
Esther Elliott b 1889
Matilda Elliott b 1892
Jane Elliott b 1894
Amelia Elliott b 1887

Having searched Ancestry they seem to reappear in Saskatchewan Canada in the 1911 census minus son Charles Robert Elliot and daughter Esther Elliot

And then possibly again in 1916 again in Saskatchewan with son Charles Robert Elliot but still minus daughter Esther is the Jenny mentioned daughter Jane ?

There are various outward passenger lists on different ships that have the correct names but wrong dates of birth to the family.

It is all  very confusing so I am just wondering if you think the entries in the Canadian census are them as it seems pretty coincidental that people with the same name and in some cases dob's aren't them. Also how would you progress the search further, did for instance people need passports to travel to Canada in the early 1900's ?

Thanks for your help

Tony
again sorry if i'm in the wrong location

Hi Tony,

It is only people with an ancestry subscription who can see the links you gave.

It does look like the family you describe.

These are the Canadian Attestation Papers for Charles Robert Elliott

https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/personnel-records/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=375425

digital file may be slow to load - 114 pages of information - interesting read.

https://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?op=pdf&app=CEF&id=B2866-S050

Note Charles says his mother Jane is a widow since 8 Feb 1900 London ?

1921 census  Grenfell Town, Qu'Appelle-Saskatchewan,

The age given for Jane on the transcription was wrong - she is 57 years old on the image. Immigrated 1906 - Charles Elliott aged 56 years. Immigrated 1920.

Not sure about Charles Elliott passing away in 1900.  He appears with Jane on the 1931 census Grenfell - this looks like a FIND A GRAVE entry for him.

I am still confused she say's her husband died in 1900 however in 1904 she was charged with bigamy by marrying Joseph Richard Batty and the charge stated that her husband Charles Elliot was still alive so I think someone is lying here also Charles the son states on the Army records he was born in Liverpool (he also say's he was born in Poplar London in 1890 on one record) when in actual fact he was born in London in 1886 strange ?
