Charles Harris Jeweller Dublin around 1850
« on: Sunday 31 March 24 10:40 BST (UK) »
Looking for help to find information on Charles Harris a Jeweller in Dublin.  His daughters Victoria and  Annie were born in Dublin in 1847, 1850 (source UK 1871 census living in Hackney London) and wife was Maria (or Marie)  b Liverpool 1800.  I have him in a Dublin Directory, date unknown.  I cannot find any trace of him apart from the directory entry and a reference to him being deceased in a newspaper notice of the marriage of his daughter Annie in 1871, or his marriage to Maria or births of his daughters.  There is a possibility that he was Jewish.  Any help or suggestions very welcome.

- I have him in a Dublin Directory, date unknown. -

of 26 Nassau Street, Dublin ?

listed under Gold, Silver smiths & Jewellers at that address in 1850

A quick check of directories on FindMyPast showed a number of entries including one from 1845 at the same address.

see this 1862 listing for Nassau St - no sign of Charles, but there is a Marie Harris at that address, suggesting that Charles may have been deceased by then.

The 1855 marriage for Fanny Harris took place at her home, ".. according to the Jewish religion"

There is a Charles Harris, Silversmith of Paradise St. Liverpool in the poll book of 1835.
He is in the 1829 directory of Liverpool as a watchmaker  and gold & silversmith at 26 Paradise Street.
He is not in the 1841 census in Liverpool or in Gore's 1843 Liverpool directory but there is

1838 Dublin directory Charles Harris watchmaker of 41 Nassau Street.

So could possibly be the same person unless you can find an earlier Irish reference.

Saunders's News-Letter (Dublin) of Wednesday 04 November 1846 has an advert from a Charles Harris of Poland House, 26 Nassau Street, selling bargains in plated goods and jewellery.

The Dublin Weekly Register of Saturday 07 August 1847 mentions a Charles Harris, watchmaker and jeweller of Nassau Street in a list of Insolvent Debtors whose petitions were to be held 20th October.

In Shaw's Dublin City Directory of 1850 he is described as a 'cigar importer'.
