Translation of Latin - Help Needed!
« on: Sunday 31 March 24 11:56 BST (UK) »
Can anyone translate the attached, please? It's from John of Fordun's Chronicle (1871 version) edited by Skene. In particular, I'd like precise details of the parts concerning Isabella.
Many thanks,
Bob

Try typing it into Google Translate (or any other latin - english translation site)

I did that for the first 7 lines and it came up with this.

And so the same count David begat by the same wife Matilda one son, named John, who afterwards succeeded him, and three daughters, Margaret, Isabella, and Adam. He also gave Margaret in marriage to Alan son of Rothland of Galwallia, who begat by her a daughter named Darworgill, and gave Isabella his second daughter to Robert de Brusse as wife, by whom he had a son named Robert.

If you do the rest and post the result, folk who can actually translate it can review it and tell you if its accurate? (I'm unsure about having a daughter called Adam e.g. but don't have enough knowledge to know if its just an odd name for a daughter or not)

Many thanks, Boo.
I reckon John of Fordun had necked a few pints of mead and got confused!
Cheers,

Or could it be Ada? That's how it would come out in Latin, but I've no idea if it's a name that occurred at that time.

Apparently Henry of Hastings married Ada of Huntingdon.

I think Galwalliae is Galloway and Rotholandi is Roland.

Is page 277 here, the same text in English?
