Hugh Hunter was born 1817 Kilwinning - no parents stated.

Unless there is a supporting record, or a DNA match, I would say that is a total guess.
If you look at the census in 1841 and 1851 for possible Hugh Hunters of the approx. age in Kilwinning and neighbouring parishes, there are scores to choose from.

Parents of an illegitimate birth might be mentioned in the kirk sessions, but from my recollection, I looked, and there were not any for the time period in question.
Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)
Clark – Faulds – Cuthbertson – Bryson – Wilson: (Ayrshire & Renfrewshire)
Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

Many thanks Neale1961 - I thought that might be the case.

James W and Elizabeth Russell had 9 of a family. Spelling is very variable.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Many thanks Forfarian for this information which is much appreciated.

Thank you to all who have read and replied to my posting.

I will now close this posting while I work with this information to see if there is any connection to "my" Hunter family.
