I'd say it's an abbreviation of either the name or a qualification, something like Manning or Esquire.

Can we see a bit more of the document so we see it in context. And the type of documenet and year?

Its a birth record of a John Ellis from 1721. It says "John Ellis base child of Sarah Ellis do(sp) Mann
