Did he name 2 daughters Ann and the first one die  :-\

I think that 1851 census is him despite some discrepancies.  He signed his marriage with a 'x'.  By 1851 he probably could write but who knows. If he needed help with his form then a Hampshire southerner may well have had difficulty understanding his Liverpool accent  ;D.  Maybe he did try to fill it in but that is how the enumerator read his writing.  The enumerators writing of the surname is not exactly clear.
