george h williams penygroes
« on: Friday 05 April 24 08:37 BST (UK) »
helo, I’ve had a dna match with a family in the USA (I’m in Caernarfon). They have a George H williams (1900-1952) as ancestor and they’ve messed up their research because they’ve mistaken Penygroes caernarvonshire with a penygroes in south wales. George’s father was Thomas H williams(1878-?) of llanllyfni parish down as a postman in 1901. Thomas is in the south wales coalfields in 1911 and it appears he lost his wife, his children including george h williams are living with his grand parents in penygroes llanllyfni. The grandfather John was born in llanddeiniolen in around 1841. I’ve spent hours trying to unpick this family, can anyone find the family before 1901 please? Their immigration record to the USA states that a williams hughes of llithfaen is their origin country contact, I’ve assumed that this was Thomas’s father in law but I haven’t been able to find him either.

You may have these already:-

Ellen Jane Williams baptised in Llanllyfni on 26th March 1899, daughter of Thomas Humphrey, a Rural Postman, and Jane Ellen, of 1 Chapel Row, Penygroes.

George on 9th September 1900 of 5 County Road, Penygroes.
David Lloyd on 16 September 1903 of 5 County Road, Penygroes.

Thomas married Jane Ellen Jones in Jul-Sep 1898

In 1921, Thomas Humphrey still has a wife (different?), Jane, and children David Lloyd, Myfanwy, Maggie and grandson, Joepher? Owen.

hi David, Thanks for the reply. Yes that’s the correct family. In the immigration record in 1923 there’s Jane (25yrs) George (22) myfanwy (10)  Maggie (2) and David lloyd (1) with their father Thomas H Williams being named as the person already in the country. William hughes llithfaen named as the contact person.

Hi, the immigration record says that Jane is 25 and from llanfairfechan. thomas h williams is her husband so it appears that he re-married. Her children are therefore Myfanwy (10) from Llithfaen, Maggie (2) from llithfaen and Thomas Lloyd (1) from penygroes. George is the son from the first wife also a Jane.

That would make Jane 15 when she had Myfanwy! There’s a lot to un-pick here.

Was she definitely her daughter?

The 1921 census has Jane as 22 but changed to 42. Her birth is transcribed as Fulham, London, but reads as Llanfairfechan.
It sounds a bit as though she was confused with his daughter, Ellen Jane

I have sent them a correction message.

Maggie was born in Ferndale, Ystradyfodwg, Glamorganshire.

hi, I think I’ve found William hughes which is named on the immigration form. He was born in Whitehaven cumberland. The family seem to be moving between the granite quarries of porth nant (nant gwrtheyrn) llithfaen and llanfairfechan.  William hughes (1876-?) with Margaret Jane ( 1878-?). Jane (1899) is with the family in the 1911 census her siblings are born in llanfairfechan and Pistyll (llithfaen).
