I've ordered lots of certificates in the past and not encountered this problem before so I'm stumped.
I'm looking for my great great grandfather Frederick Orton. I can find him in census records, I can find him in indexes on freebmd/ancestry etc, but when I try to order certificates from GRO it comes up as No Matching Results Found. I feel like I'm banging my head against a brick wall.
I thought, well maybe, it's a misprint but I've cross referenced and I keep coming up with the same details.
Frederick Orton. Died 1895 Age 47 Leicester Vol 7a Page 144
But apparently that record doesn't exist according to GRO. I just don't know where else to look.
If its a gap in the records, well fair enough, but as far as I can see the records for 1895 should be there?
I'd really appreciate if someone could shed some light on what's happening here.
Thanks x

I have found his burial at Welford Road, Frederick was buried 9 Sep and abode was given as the mortuary, I'll have a look at the records I have and see if there is any other record for you.

There are a lot of entries missing from the index.  At the foot of the search page you are invited to report it.

In the "Reason assumed missing" box say "Entry is in FreeBMD"

It may take a week for them to deal with it, you can view your reports from the same page.

Added: We recently had a discussion about this, and a more complicated missing entry, here:

There is a report in the Leicester Journal 13 September 1895 and an inquest was held into his death after he collapsed in the street and died; he had been previously living at 22 Charnwood Road but his body was taken straight to the mortuary, a Mrs Noon had been walking with him and she saw him collapse as she turned round. The verdict was death by natural causes

As I understand it, the coroner would have signed the death certificate after the inquest.

You could order it from the relevant register office.

Because of the different indexing rules used , it is quite common , and normal, to find differences between the index on FreeBMD and that on GRO.

The first thing to check is whether other entries on the same page (7a 144) are in the GRO index  - and in this case they are, so it isn't a case where the whole page has been missed during the digitisation process, which is seen as an issue sometimes -  it could just be that one entry was missed, but that is unusual.

The most likely explanation is that the entry has been transcribed and indexed in a different name, or name variation, but because of the way the GRO search engine is locked down they can be very difficult to find.

But I can't find him.
