Civil Bell Officer
« on: Monday 08 April 24 18:15 BST (UK) »
We are researching our family history and one of our relatives in the 1901 Irish Census is listed as a Civil Bell Officer. Google has returned no results. Any ideas what this job is/entails? Tynagh, Galway 1901 Irish census. He was 43. Head of family

I just did a newspaper search which may help, in a strange way. There were two hits, both in Ireland, but they were both actually references to a Civil Bill Officer and this had been ‘misread’ by the OCR.

There are many hits to “Civil Bill Officer” however, with the vast majority in Ireland. So I think you are looking for the definition of a Civil Bill Officer.

It seems that lists of court offficers were published regularly in the Irish press. The first mention of Joseph Fahy, Tynagh, Loughrea is in December 1893.

He resigned in 1912: this advert for his replacement appeared, 24 August 1912 in the Galway Express. This is one of a number of similar items  in this issue of the paper, so nothing specific about him I think.

"Civil Bill Officer" at BNA:

Earliest: 1832, Newry Telegraph
Most recent: 1990, Sligo Champion

There are lots of reports from 1921 about the murder of Civil Bill Officers.

This advert from 1975 is quite informative.

It would be nice if people would submit corrections for the incorrect census transcript.

Over the last number of years I have submitted countless corrections to either transcriptions or images but apparently the correction faeries haven't done any of them yet.
