(English) Help deciphering birth certificate comments
« on: Tuesday 09 April 24 17:01 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm having difficulty deciphering the comments on my late grandfather's birth certificate, those in Box 6 which detail the name of the mother.

My attempt is below, with some blanks:
"Mary Jane White ___ ____ ___"
Formerly: "Hyslop"

For context, the father box has been left blank, and at some point both Mary Jane and her son (my grandfather) reverted back to using her maiden surname (Hyslop).

Anyone who can decipher the three blank words above would be immensely helpful.

Thanks!

Welcome to RootsChat!

I'm definitely not an expert, but I thought I would have a go.

Could it be?:

Mary Jane White
Housekeeper
8 Marchioness St

I'm not sure about the street name, but I looked at a list of streets in Belfast and it looked most similar to this one. The writing is virtually illegible!

Fidler - West Ilsley, Berkshire
Hamlin/Hamlyn - Long Sutton & Martock, Somerset
Head - Marlborough & Alton Priors, Wiltshire
Minson - Kingstone, Somerset/Symondsbury, Dorset
Owsley - Buckland St Mary, Somerset
Pyke - (West) Weeke/Wick, Pewsey, Wiltshire
Salisbury - Dowlish Wake/West Dowlish, Somerset

Okay, it is definitely 8 Marchioness Street.

It is actually where Mary Jane was born!:

And where Mary Jane's mother was living when she married Mary Jane's father!:

Lots of history in this house.

Oh my thank you so much for the effort you have gone to! It's very much appreciated.

Ah so it's just the mother's occupation and address, interesting, the mystery of the surname switch continues then.

To be pedantic, I think it actually says “a” Housekeeper.
