Ship "Maori" to Auckland 1864 Passenger Register
« on: Wednesday 10 April 24 19:18 BST (UK) »
Various NZ newspapers have the passenger list for the "Maori" which departed London on 28 July 1864, and arrived Port of Auckland, NZ, on 23 Dec 1864.

Denise & Peter's Passenger Lists (hosted on freepages.rootsweb) also has a list, but this one contains the passengers' ages and occupations - which suggests the transcriber had access to the actual Passenger Register.

Can anyone please tell me where this Passenger Register can be viewed online?
regards
John

Right at the bottom of Denise & Peter’s page is the reference

Archives New Zealand Micro 5019

But it’s not helping! I thought all the lists at Archives were on FamilySearch. But I cannot see it.

Hi John,

The voyage you mention departed from the Cape of Good Hope on 7 November 1864, according to the report published in the New Zealander on  24 December 1864, Page 4. This includes the passenger list.

I've searched Archway for 'micro5019' and also tried other search terms, all without success so far, but I'm certain they will still hold it.

But to answer your question, many passenger lists do not appear online.

Okay thanks for looking at that. I'll email Archives NZ and see if they can shed any light on that reference number.
Cheers
John

And in case anyone is interested in that 1864 voyage of the "Maori", the Daily Southern Cross, 23 Dec 1864, which has the passenger list, also contains the Captain's report which mentions the "Maori" departed London on 28 July 1864, unloaded cargo at Cape of Good Hope, then sailed on to NZ.
Denise and Peter's site has the the voyage indexed as coming from South Africa, which might mislead some people into just disregarding that sailing. I see the Denise and Peter page has a story about a "Maori" passenger which mentions their ancestor came from South Africa - I wonder whether they wasted time searching South African records ... :(

It is from a register of immigrants.

Did you already know that Dundee, or did you figure it out from some detail?

No, I don't know anything  ;D   I am used to Queensland where there are a lot of records relating to immigrants other than passenger lists.  On a hunch I searched the NZ archives for the words - immigration scheme.
