This is just an index listing at Archives NZ.
It indicates that Alexander Edmund EDWARDS was in New Zealand from 1875.
https://collections.archives.govt.nz/en/web/arena/search#/entity/aims-archive/R25803032/new-zealand-certificate-of-competency-as-master-of-a-home-trade-passenger-ship---alexander-edmund-edwards?q=Alexander+edmund+Edwards&source=aims-archive

We do have a "list" of Mariners / Seamen relating to New Zealand.
Have used before but can't find at present ???     Maybe someone else will be able to find it and post the link here.    ;D

Would love to know more about their lives in NZ, have found a little information regarding Captain Edwards being the Master of the ship "Patea" that wrecked, but not much more on Jane Edwards life in NZ.

Mmm ... not sure that that vessel "Patea" was actually "wrecked".    Seems to have been described as being "ashore" (I guess meaning it had run aground ?).   Also indicated it was likely to be refloated ?   My info was incorrect - hadn't looked far enough through papers but I see the "Patea" was being sold at salvage in 1882.   :-[   ;D

Captain EDWARDS appears in NZ newpapers around 1881-82 - where there is note he took over the "Patea" from a Capt. GIBBONS ?
Can't see EDWARDS in the capacity of "captain" - in the coastal trade - after that date ?   Hopefully if we can find our way to the NZ Mariners records, there may be more info.   ;D

We have this one of the same sort

https://marinersandships.com.au/search.htm

There are 4 possible sightings, 1880's but again, rather indefinite. ::)
Use “A J Edwards master” in the search.

Will look carefully into this, yes Alexander Edmund Edwards became Alexander John Edwards, thanks for that website.

Hi Jan,

You might be interested in the headstone erected in memory of the Captain:

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/221527860/alexander-john-edwards

You can read the full inscription by clicking on "View Original" and then magnifying it.

His death notice did also appear in a New Zealand newspaper:

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/EP19000120.2.39?end_date=31-03-1900&items_per_page=10&page=2&query=alexander+john+edwards&snippet=true&start_date=01-01-1900&type=ARTICLE

[By the way, the words, "my dear wife" which appear in reply #12, were commonly used 'back in the day' when preparing a will.  :) ]
