Elizabeth CLAPHAM 1817-? in Watford
« on: Wednesday 17 April 24 02:38 BST (UK) »
Trying to find Elizabeth CLAPHAM after 1851 census. She was born Elizabeth COMINS and she married William Henry CLAPHAM at Witheridge, Devon on 1 Jan 1835. She was from Witheridge, baptised there 22 Oct 1817.

Can't find her or her husband in 1841. Should be in London or Watford, although could be in Yorkshire.

They were in Watford in 1851. His brother's wife was visiting them.

William Henry died in Watford on 22 Jul 1859. No sign of Elizabeth anywhere after that, unless she predeceased him.

No children that I have been able to find.

Thanks

The probate gives the following.
--- oaths of Ellen Eliza Clapham of Watford aforesaid widow
Thomas Howell Stevens of Eton College
Robert Tanner of Painswick Gloucester
William Willoughby Comins of 84 Great Portland Street St Marylebone.

William Henry Clapham was of 84 Great Portland Street.

So when was his sister in law widowed or are they saying she is his widow?
William Willoughby Comins must be a relative of Elizabeth's

UPDATE a copy of the Will can give you the answer.

His death notice doesn't provide any answers.

Bucks Herald dated 30 July 1859.  (and many other newspapers)
On the 25th at his residence Upton House, Watford Hertfordshire, William Henry Clapham Esq. of Great Portland Street, London -Solicitor aged 58 years.

Ellen Anne Clapham was his sister in law, his brother's wife who was visiting in 1851. The brother Henry Charles was at home in London with his two daughters. Henry Charles died in 1852, so Ellen was widow by 1859.

Don't know about TH Stevens or Robert Tanner.

WW Comins married one of Henry Charles and Ellen Anne Clapham's daughters.

Am guessing that as there is no mention of Elizabeth she may have already died.

Thomas Howell Stevens of Eton College one of the administrators married Elizabeth Comins elder sister Mary 29 November 1834 at Witheridge Devon by license.
He was of St George Bloomsbury.

The newspaper notice of the marriage says she is the eldest daughter of Thomas Comins Esq. of Witheridge. THS was of Henrietta Street, Brunswick Square.

The newspaper article for Elizabeth's marriage says she is the youngest daughter of Thomas Comins Esq of Witheridge. They also married by license. WHC was of St Marylebone.

They were married by William Comins.

I doubt he was in Yorkshire, he served his apprenticeship under John Burgess of Great Portland Street.

Directories 1850 and 1856 have him as a partner in the firm Clapham and Barrow at 29 Great Portland Street.

A copy of the will can be downloaded for £1.50.

Thanks amondg.

I have WW Comins marriage to Catherine Clapham, daughter of Henry Charles. Gives his father as William.

Census records give his birthpace as Witheridge, so he must be some relation of Elizabeth and Mary Comins.

WH Clapham did go to Yorkshire, but I think only to visit. His older brother lived in Sandal Magna, and he was a witness at a marriage in Wakefield in 1828 and one in Leeds in 1831.

Robert Tanner and Mary Henly Tanner were the witnesses to the marriage of Henry Charles Clapham to Ellen Ann Skelton 29 June 1836 at St Pancras.

So that's the forth administrator accounted for.
