Catholic marriages Wigan
« on: Wednesday 17 April 24 13:31 BST (UK) »
I'm wondering if there are any records for Catholic Marriages in St.John's chapel Standishgate Wigan. My Gr. Gr. Grandparents Esther Dale and Joseph Marsh were married there 2nd Jan 1858. I have a marriage certificate but wondered if anymore information is on the Catholic record.
Thanks

I wondered if the Catholic registers would tell me anything other than what's on the certificate? Like the Mother's name or maiden name. Are these online do you know or just at the LRO. I can't get there but maybe they would look if I phoned them. Thanks for the info.

I can't see anything except Liverpool.  You could contact the records office.

Is the father named on the certificate you have, any witnesses. Are you trying to find them before the marriage.
Mothers name isn't normally given on any marriage certificate.

Just looked at Liverpool marriages for the same time , some have no extra details but others have both fathers and some have mothers maiden name.

I suppose your best bet is asking the records office.

Do you have her father’s name and occupation from the marriage certificate?

Is this your family?
1861 2781/118/39
Joseph and Esther with children John and Joseph?

There is an Esther Dale in 1851 2199/565/19, Wigan

Esther Dale, 18 yrs b ‘Carvin’, Ireland (presumably Cavan)
David Dale, 25 yrs, visitor, also
He is unmarried but Esther is down as ‘wife’.
In the household of William Burnett.

In 1851, the birthplace is ‘Carvin’ and is dittoed under the birthplace of the son, William Burnett.
Mary Burnett is b ‘Monagin’ (Monaghan probably)

1871 3892/101/36
Esther Marsh b Monaghan.

Maybe a connection to Mary Burnett.

As has been said, Catholic marriages do sometimes show mother’s name.

The church is now the Parish of St William. There is an email address.
