Drumlough Presbyterian church
« on: Wednesday 17 April 24 17:27 BST (UK) »
My g.g. Grandparents had most of their children baptised in Drumlough Presbyterian church From 1849  onwards. No marriage records seem to exist from before then and I just wonder which church in the area they might have been married in. Any ideas? Rosemary

According to my guide to Presbyterian congregations, Drumlough opened in 1819.  In 1841 the congregation had 1750 members. So there would have been baptisms and marriages there from 1819 onwards but it appears no early records exist.

Bear in mind that tradition was to marry in the bride's church, so which church a marriage took place in often depended on the bride’s denomination and residence.

Unfortunately I have never found out where Prudence Boyd came from, but I assume she was local, as George, who was a carpenter was working in the townland of Drumlough . Rosemary

According to PRONI's Guide to Church Records they had microfilmed copies of baptisms from 1855 onwards so presumably one from 1849 until that date were in local custody? (although PRONI's Guide usually mentions records in local custody.

Thank you Agadowey, but in fact it’s the marriage of George Truesdale and
Prudence Boyd which I am looking for. It’s one of my brick walls. Rosemary

Yes, but you mentioned having baptisms for the children 'From 1849  onwards' which indicates there might be earlier records than those microfilmed by PRONI and if that is the case it's possible there are earlier marriage records.

Strangely enough Joh Grenham (a reliable resource) gives much earlier dates for baptisms and says microfilm at PRONI!
Presbyterian- Drumlough: bapt. 1827-1943, marr. 1871-1936
PRONI MIC.1P/359; C.R.3/9

https://www.johngrenham.com/records/county_church_full.php?county=Down&search_type=full&denomination=Presbyterian

Might be worth checking PRONI's e-catalogue before contacting them.
