lukeis surname orgins
« on: Friday 26 April 24 03:30 BST (UK) »
Hi so i've recently started looking into the lukeis surname, nothing makes sense, it firstly appears in sutton veny Wiltshire in the early 1600's , i've had a professional genealogist confirm the spelling as lukeis  on a baptism ,church record, what throws me off is that the name appears around in the 1800's 1900s in places like Germany immigrating to America from german ports.ukeis Name Meaning
Dutch: patronymic from a shortened form of the personal name Ludeke, a cognate of German Lüdecke (see Luedecke ).

Americanized form of German Lückens: patronymic from a shortened form of the personal name Lüdecke (see Luedecke ). that comes from family search but i wonder if it is infact a german name why the name doesn't appear as german on early records, any suggestions/ideas??

It is very possible that the two sets of "Lukeis" families are not related at all, just a spelling concidence.

For example, the surname Martin is common in multiple countries across Europe, including England and France.  I wouldn't try to call it an English surname or a French surname because it has such a long history in both countries that the origins of any particular line of Martins are probably lost to time.

A more extreme example: the surname Lee is either English, or as another spelling of Li, Chinese.

It could have been Lukeys. Here are some examples from the court of Common Pleas in the 1400s:

1415 Lukeys, William, of Pokeswell, Dorset, husbandman
https://waalt.uh.edu/index.php/CP40/618:_K-Z

1430 Lukeys, Thomas, of Enwerne Mynstre, Dors, shepherd

1450 Lukeys, William, of Blandford Forum, Dorset, gentleman
http://aalt.law.uh.edu/Indices/CP40Indices/CP40no758/CP40no758Act.htm

Blandford Forum and Iwerne Minster are about 20 miles from Sutton Veny.

As for how Lukeys came about, I can't say for certain. Possible from Luke?
The surname Roberts is often rendered as Robertys, so this could be Lukes/Lukeys.

In A Dictionary of British Surnames, P.H. Reaney groups together Luke, Luck, Luckes, Look, Looks and Loukes, giving examples going back to the 13th century in several English counties.

So is Lukeis related, or another variant?

In the Wiltshire archives, there is a will of Robert Lucas, senior, of Sutton Veny, husbandman, 1639, with the note: Surname written Lukeis, but other Lucases reside in Sutton Veny.

There are other wills and inventories of Lucas in Sutton Veny:

1556 Alice Lucas

1628 Alice Lucas

I have no wish to be rude, but this thread shows the importance of capital letters.
