Do you have Edwin in the 1891 census?
Where are Edwin's three children living in 1901? Looks like one of the sons is with his grandmother in Berkshire? Where is the other son and daughter?

1908 - I can see mum Mary, Edwin, and Rose in the workhouse in Portsmouth.
1909 - Edwin and Rose are back in the workhouse. Admitted from Fareham.

1904 - There's a Mary Daniels (born 1864) in the workhouse in Portsmouth.  ???

1905 - There's several School Admission records in Wokingham for Edwin Daniels (born 1897).
However, the father's name is "John". Previous school was Woking N.S. Notes: "Left the town".

1907 - Another School Admission record for Edwin in Winchester, Hampshire. Mother's name is Mary Chilton. (Isn't that one of Mary's other surnames?) Previous school attended was in Wokingham.

1907 - School Admission for Rose in Fareham, Hampshire. Mother is Mary Chilton. There's a Note saying "Admission Form Filled Falsley". Last school attended: Cottage Grove, Southsea.

If you can confirm where the children are in the 1901 and 1911 census reports I can look for more records.

1901 - Edwin is with his grandmother Mary McManus (age 68).
Address: Finchampstead Road, Wokingham.

Do you have the 3 children in the 1911 census? This would include Philip William (born 1903).

Also, what's with "wife" Mary's various surnames? (e.g. Chilton)?  ???

Is Philip William Daniels the army chap who married in 1927 in Surrey?
He names his father as "Philip" (seaman), deceased.

I have gone back to look at Mary Ann McManus  - Born 27 Oct 1859 in Birmingham,  I have her in the
1861 census father James McManus Tailor.  1871 in Winchester.
In 1891 she is living in same house as a James Harlow it states she is single.  No occ.
I think this is where the Harlow comes in but no marriage as yet.

1911 - Mary Chilton (born 1863 Birmingham) is in Southampton. Widow. Laundress.
Location: Royal Southants And Southampton Hospital. She's a servant there.

The census indicates she had 5 children, 2 living, 3 dead.

Do you have Rose and/or Edwin Daniels in the 1911 census?

I saw that 1911 census record, too. Very odd about the birthplaces.
Do you have either Edwin or Rose in the 1921 census? I presume one of them went on to marry, because you said there's a direct descendant of Edwin (born 1859) you're in touch with.

I think Edwin's birth is going to remain a mystery for now. Unless the descendant has done a DNA test. Are you related to Edwin, as well? If so, have you done a DNA test?
