Bertie Byrne - Hacketstown
« on: Tuesday 30 April 24 08:05 BST (UK) »
Hello my great grandfathers name is Bertie Byrne he was born in 1901 and dies in 1987. In 1930 at age 29 he married my great grandmother Elizabeth Byrne (1908-1946). I cannot find any information at all about Bertie Byrne's parents at all. The fathers name is left blank on the marriage certificate and I cannot seem to find his birth record. He does not show up on the 1901 census and in the 1911 census he is living with his grandmother. How can I possibly find his birth certificate and the name's of his parents? Bertie is short for Bertram. Bertie had 9 children with his first wife, there names are Albert, Pat, John, Tom, Bill, Michael, Jane, Elizabeth and Mary. He then had a further 8 children with his second wife there names are Bert, Paul, Peter, Dominic, Kathleen, Bridget, Marcella and Bernie. I'm telling you there names incase it can help find Bertie's parents names.

Here is the 1911 census with Bertie and grandmother, Bridget.

Do you have Bridget in 1901 with her family?

By tracing back the grandmother you should find names of Bertie s aunts and uncles and might be able to work out which one was his parent .

According to 1911 census 7 of Bridget's. Children were still living then .

Regarding the duplicate post do you have any evidence that he was also called Bertram ?

Good luck

The only evidence I have is what my grandfather has told me, he is Bertie's son and the transcript for Bertie's second marriage where his name was listed as Bertrand Byrne it could have been read wrong, the actual marriage certificate is not online so I cannot check it.

Here's the Byrne family in 1901 (surname & forenames reversed so just as well I started by searching for them at the same address)-

All twelve children would need to be traced as Bertie's mother(?) could have been dead by 1911.

The reason I say "mother?" is that we don't know if Bridget Byrne is Bertie's maternal or paternal grandmother.

Oh well done aghadowey.

Added

Bridget has 7 children living with her in 1901 - she declares 7 still living in 1911.

There is another Byrne family in Bridge Lane with an infant son called James- would keep this in mind as a possibility-
https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Carlow/Hacketstown/Bridge_Lane/1037817/

Same family in 1911? No James but quite a few of their children have died-
https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Carlow/Hacketstown/Bridge_Lane/308127/

Note: there are actually quite a few families named Byrne in Bridge Lane!

Added- Arthur Byrne's birth gives mother's maiden name as Byrne-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1901/01943/1751373.pdf

Between 1899-1902 there are 212 children with the surname Byrne in Baltinglass registration district which covers Hacketstown.
