Sir James Sutter's Troop of East Lothian Cavalry 1796
« on: Tuesday 30 April 24 12:20 BST (UK) »
Has anyone heard of this Troop?
I am struggling to find information about this troop as it seems the East Lothian Yeomanry wasn't created until 1797 but I have a marriage record of 1796 in which John Stewart is recorded as a Private in the Sir James Sutter's Troop of East Lothian Cavalry.
He and Agnes Summers married on the 1st of April 1796 in Forfar. SP (Extract of Old Parochial Register 75720)

At this link–

– there is a discussion which, I think, concludes that pre-1797 references must be to the East Lothian Fencible Cavalry.

Is it Sir James Suttie of the Haddington Fencibles (East Lothian?)

Thank you both for the help, those links are very helpful and will keep me busy for a while.
Im not sure which Cavalry, Fencibles or Yeomanry, he was a Private in as the marriage record only states " Sir James Sutters Troop of East Lothian Cavalry".

But as it is pre-1797 then I am assuming it will be Fencibles.

Thanks again
