Help with deciphering an occupation
« on: Friday 03 May 24 03:21 BST (UK) »
I have attached 2 snippets from 2 sources showing the same information. One is from the Manchester, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1930 (Cathedral) records, and the other is from the Lancashire, England, Church of England Marriages and Banns, 1754-1936 records.
We can make out an occupation for Bryan Rooney that looks like ??ustian Cutter in both sources.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I have lots of ancestors in Macclesfield, who were Fustian Cutters, a sort of very thick velvet.

As a teenager, I first came across a reference to Fustian in the description of Michael Henchard at the start of "The Mayor of Casterbridge" , as he is wearing a "Fustian waistcoat with white horn buttons and breeches of the same". The notes to the chapter add that Fustian was a diagonally ribbed (twilled) cotton material usually dark in colour and made for hard wear.
I was interested to read in Neale1961 's post the article about its association with radicals, having Chartists in the family I can now picture them in their Fustian suits!
