I don't suppose it will add much but the Valuation Rolls of 1855 for Montrose include an entry for a Mrs Hogg as tenant/occupier, dwelling house, Hill Street. (Just 2 credits to view).

There is a single James Bain recorded in Brechin: tenant/occupier, dwelling house, Nether Tenements. (There is no James Bain recorded in Montrose.)

This advert, 21 October 1851, Brechin Advertiser, suggests that there were changes at Caldcoats in late 1851.
