Translation of Latin Sequestration 1604
« on: Saturday 04 May 24 07:56 BST (UK) »
William Edwards was vicar of Tysoe from 1563 until his death in 1605. By then the once strong handwriting in the register of 1571 had deteriorated to a loose scrawl, with an unfortunate break in record keeping including the probable omission the burial of my 10x great grandfather Humphrey Hewens, blacksmith.

The Vicarage was sequestrated with William Clarke of Oxhill and his brother Nicholas named amongst the administrators. Attached is the order.

I can just about make out the English handwriting, but could you obtain a translation for the Latin? My Latin is barely schoolboy standard!

The document is a bond.  Another document should contain the condition of the obligation.

Partial translation follows:

May all men know by these presents that we, William Clarke, of Oxhill, in the county of Warwick, yeoman, and Francis Moores, of the same place, in the said county, yeoman, are held and firmly obliged to the Reverend in Christ Lord Gervase, Bishop of Worcester, and William Wode, doctor of law, his vicar in general divine matters, in the sum of forty pounds of good and lawful money of England, to be paid to the same Reverend aforesaid and William Wode or to his certain attorney, heirs, executors or assigns.  To make this payment we truly and faithfully commit ourselves - - - - -  - - ---- - etc. etc.

Signed and sealed by
William Clarke
Francis Moores

Dated 20 February 1604

Postscript: The year is 1605 by modern reckoning.
