This same online tree with George Orr who married Jane in Ireland said that Jane was Jane Gibson whereas son Samuel's death record had Jane McClelland as his mother. Margaret Hiett does not name a mother at death and I don't have Jane's death certificate in 1861. There is probably none for the unnamed sister although Joseph Shaw's death Jan 18, 1920 in Fort Dodge, Webster Co., Iowa, might name his mother. Or his marriage in Pennsylvania Apr 30, 1872 to Anna Elizabeth Switzer.

Joseph Shaw is buried there
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/66392754/joseph-shaw

but familySearch says he died in the District of Columbia, 18 January 1920.
The DC death records are available at a Family History Center.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F7TY-H73

Someone who has contributed to the tree on familySearch is aware of the record, but his information does not include his mother's name.

The Washington Post of January 20, 1920, says he died the 18th at the residence of his daughter, Mrs T.B. Hedekln (?) and would be buried at Ft Dodge, Iowa.

Thank you oldohiohome. This is interesting information. Probably taken to be buried with his wife Anna. Mabel would be the daughter whose home he died at since her last name is mentioned on findagrave.
Thanks again

I have found Matthew McWhinny on the 1880 census in Pittsburgh and he has a Sarah Johnston in the household, age 16, possibly one of the 4 children for whom Matthew was guardian for in 1885, when he died.

I found the Johnston/Johnson children in 1870 in Allegheny. I am sure they are the children that had Matthew McWhinney/Mawhinney as guardian in 1885. The four named children are there, Mary, Sarah, Emma and Margaret and their mother is a widow, only age 34 in 1870. Now to figure out the rest of the story and the relationship to Matthew.

Wow, Sandra. This has to be them. I searched for hours this morning for each and everyone of them but I didn’t find them. I did see the gap between Eliza and Mary on the 1870 census so this could be a remarriage for David.
I do have a couple in Ireland named John Johnston and Margaret Lennox but they didn’t have a son David that I know of although there are gaps in their children where David might fit between 1822 and 1828 and again between 1828 and 1835.
I think I will look for the death of David between 1866 and 1870.

That death certainly fits the bill and his date of birth fits in the gap of children for John Johnston and Margaret Lennox. I will have to look into that.
Thanks ever so much.
