Help with finding a marriage licence for Joseph Buckley

I have found a marriage record for Joseph Buckley and Sarah Tinker, who were married by license on 2 August 1828 at High Hoyland Church in Yorkshire. I think the license will probably tell me who Joseph's parents are. I don't know where to go from here. Can anyone help with this please?

Transcription of that says Joseph & Sarah both 21 (which will mean they are over 21 not actually 21)
I would be very surprised indeed if the parents or even the fathers were named. I’ve yet to see one that does when the parties are not minors.

Thanks very much for finding that out. It does at least help to know that Joseph is over 21. Why would a licence be required do you think, when they were both of age? A shotgun wedding?

yes - the licence was issued on the 1st and they married on the 2nd.
otherwise they would have had to wait for banns to be read over 3 weeks.

I may be wrong about this but I believe  sometimes there was an element of snobbery about having a licence instead of banns.
Of course then as now, sometimes it just might have been more convenient.

Can you outline the trail back to them?

Sometimes I've noticed that non-conformist families went for licences rather than banns. I don't know exactly why, but possibly to minimise the fees paid to the local church and minister.

There were a number of reasons to obtain a licence - some have been suggested. I've found often they are of different religions, or one (or other) may not have lived in the area for long.  Additionally, bride may have been pregnant and so they wanted to marry fast. So a number of options.

I am surprised that the actual License exits because it had to be presented to the minister at the time.

It will be the allegation that is held at the Borthwick, not the licence itself.
