Keogh
« on: Thursday 23 May 24 03:07 BST (UK) »
I have been unsuccessfully searching for baptisms for Patrick and John Keogh born in Kelsha, Rathvilly. Their parents Thomas Keogh and Bridget Brophy were married on the 22nd April, 1847
at St John’s, Kilkenny City. Patrick immigrated to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia where his aunt was
already living. He married on the 21st February, 1871 and his age on the marriage certificate states
that he was 25 years old. John Keogh married Anne Whelan née Molloy a widow in Baltinglass on
the 23rd February, 1873. Bridget Keogh baptised in Kelsha on the 22nd October, 1849. Elizabeth
and Ellen Keogh were baptised in 1857 and 1859 in Paulstown, Kilkenny. The shippings records
show that the three girls put their ages back when they immigrated to Brisbane, Queensland,
Australia.

I don’t have any information on Thomas Keogh’s parents or where he was born. He died on the
25th December, 1896 in Ballygurteen. John Keogh his son was present at his death. Bridget Brophy was baptised on the 10th May, 1819 in Carrigeen, Kilkenny. Her parents were Patrick
Brophy and Bridget Delany. Bridget died on the 4th September, 1891 in Ballygurteen.

Any help would be appreciated.

Are you certain that the couple living in Kelsha Co. Wicklow are the same ones that married in Kilkenny city ?

On the baptism for Bridget in 1849 the father's name looks like John to me - plus Patrick's estimated year of birth based on marriage details would work out as being about 1846, so before that marriage in Kilkenny. If that's accurate then maybe he was baptised under his mother's surname or in Kilkenny?

Here is Pat Kehoe, baptised 24th April 1842 with parents Thomas Kehoe and Biddy Brophy, of Kelsha. The sponsors are Nicholas and Judith Brophy.

Other baptisms

Patt - 23rd March 1829 (if this is the same family, this one must have died and the second one named after him)

John - 28th June 1839

Just for information
The marriage of John Kehoe and Anne Whelan - 1873
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1873/11262/8130565.pdf

Did Patrick marry in Australia?
Who was the aunt who was already there?

I can’t see a death in 1896 for Thomas. Do you have the details?

Thanks KG.
So, if he was 79 yrs (approx.) in 1896, born about 1817.
That would rule out the baptism of that Patt in 1829 with parents, Thos and Bridget Brophy.

Thank you all for your replies I have not been completely convinced that Patrick was the brother of
my g.grandmother, Ellen and her sisters Bridget and Elizabeth. The birth date, birth location for
Patrick plus the same parents names has raised questions. Catherine Brophy, Bridget’s sister
immigrated to Victoria in 1854 and married Martin Phelan in 1857. I thought that was probably why
Patrick came to Victoria. Patrick married Louisa Lavezzolo on the 21st February, 1871 in Daylesford,
Victoria. He died on the 22nd April, 1883 in Heathcote, Victoria.

We know there was a son John as he was present at Thomas’s death in 1896. Is he the same John
who married Anne Whelan in 1873?

Thanking you
Kind Regards
