Can anyone find John and Hester?
« on: Thursday 23 May 24 16:06 BST (UK) »
John Orton m Hester West on 21 Oct 1805 in Blaby. The surname is sometimes misheard or mistranscribed as Arton or Horton; Hester could also be Easter, Esther.

I can see baptisms for children of theirs in Blaby every year or two between 1806 - 1825. I can't find John or Hester in the 1841 census.

Geneanet has a tree which gives John's burial as Blaby, 6 Jan 1845 -- but I can't see it in the Blaby PRs.

Hester (Esther Horton) is in the 1851 census in Great Malvern with her daughter Sarah and son in law Samuel Langley. It says that she was widowed, born in Snarestone, and age 66. Probate was issued in 1862 for Esther Orton, widow of John, and that gives death details as being Syston, 11 Nov 1859. The death certificate actually gives the name of Elizabeth Orton, age 73, but does say that she was John's widow; the informant was Hannah Moore, who I don't think was a family member so may just have known Esther as "Mrs" or "Widow". I don't know why Esther was in Syston.

Anyhow, can anyone see these two in 1841 anywhere? Or spot a death/burial for John?

Furthermore, can anyone spot a baptism for Hester? Ancestry trees suggest William West and Sarah nee Taverner, but I can't see a birth at all.

Thanks in advance!

Is this the couple in 1841?  John is a labourer.

Was John also a butcher? If so, would this be his 1845 death notice?

Yes, John was a butcher so thank you for this!

I'm not sure about that 1841 census. The names match up, but there were other John Ortons of a similar age to mine, who were baptised in Leicester, and I can't be sure which was which.

Morning,Willsy

I found the GRO reference for the death cert after Ashtone pointed me in that direction, but unfortunately it's one of those where you can't get a digital download so I may need to cough up tyhe full £7 to see more!

I also found his burial in St Margaret, listed as John HORTON.
