Adoption and birth certificate query.
« on: Thursday 23 May 24 17:11 BST (UK) »
I have just been asked a question by a friend that I cannot answer. One of her in-laws was born in West Germany. After a divorce this person's mother remarried a British soldier who then adopted this person. I have sight of the adoption papers. After the adoption a birth certificate was issued with the adoptive father's surname as this person's surname and place of birth as 'West Germany' by the GRO. Again I have sight of the original certificate. Is this a normal procedure when somebody is adopted in this country? Any information will be most gratefully received!

Sounds quite normal.... the new certificate is taken from the Adopted Children Register. If it is the short version (which is what was nornally given to use as a "birth"certificate) it wont have the word "adopted" anywhere.

Yes

My husband was adopted when his step father was in Northern Ireland, so he has a 'birth' certificate issued in Northern Ireland, but states he was born in South Wales

In Australia they  are starting to introduce integrated birth certificates which include both birth and adoptive parent details. Possibly also siblings.
