No where does it say born Surrey.

1848, 4 February Essex Standard
He was among a great many prisoners transferred from Springfield Prison to Millbank Prison.

Springfield was in Essex to Millbank London/Surrey

His Tasmanian Convict Record at the reference below indicates his "Native Place" as St. George Borough which is in Surrey:

Thank you for the Census details, I'm extremely grateful.  On the balance of probabilities I would agree the correct family. 

However, where the elusive "Edwin" I wonder ??? 8)

His convict indent covers two pages, images 210 and 211.  The final remarks column shows M(other) Eliza and B(rother) Edwin at NP (Native Place).

I find the "Indent" documentation one of the most helpful in verifying whether or not the correct person is being researched.

If his father was living when he was transported then you would expect him to be named.  I have always found the information on indents to be very accurate.
