St Cleer churchyard photo
« on: Sunday 26 May 24 06:15 BST (UK) »
Does any kind Rootschatter live near St Cleer, and would be able to take a photograph for me?

I have found there is a Pomery chest tomb in the graveyard.
There is a photo of it on Historic England website as it's a 'Listed Building'. https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1329222?section=official-list-entry

Unfortunately, this is a photograph of the complete tomb, which is great in itself, but it seems to me the top slab has a great deal of writing on it, which is no doubt the memorial inscriptions of those  buried there.
The Historic England website cites 'Joseph Pomery' who died in 1788, but according to the parish register, it was 'John Pomery' who died and was buried there in 1788. I think his wife Grace may also be buried there.

The Historic England website gives where it is :
POMERY MONUMENT IN THE CHURCHYARD ABOUT 5 METRES SOUTH OF SOUTH AISLE OF CHURCH OF ST CLARUS

I would be very grateful for a photograph - a little difficult for me to get there from the other side of the world!

I did put a request out on findagrave for a photo - the grave is listed but no photo attached to it, but that was some time ago now, and I don't know if anyone will pick it up.

Thanks for any help

Hello Goldie. As it happens i was looking round this very churchyard just yesterday, unfortunately i've only seen this post today (28th)  :(  However, i could take a photo of the tomb, i don't live too far away. Maybe this weekend as the weather is looking nice.

Well how great Tin man!  :)
That would be fabulous indeed.

I believe St Cleer is very close to St Neot.
There is a similar thing there.
Richard Dangar was buried in 1731.
According to the findagrave site, there is a chest tomb there to the Danger family.
There is a photo of the whole of it on the site, and some of the inscription on the top, but not all of.
Would it be too much to ask to see if you can find that too?
It doesn't look as if it would be too difficult to find.

Charles Pomery married Mary Dangar in 1704. Her father was the Richard Dangar.

Let's hope for nice weather.
It's cold, wild, wet and windy here on the other side of the world!

Hello again Goldie
Just an observation from the Historic England website regarding Saint Neots, (don't know if you've already seen it) at the end of the church details the following are mentioned as memorials in the church:
Richard Pomery 1744.
William Dangar 1831.
William Dangar 1868.

https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1329212?section=official-list-entry

Tomb in the churchyard:
William Dangar 1789.

https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1159972?section=official-list-entry

More ancestors maybe?

Thanks very much Tinman.

Funnily enough, I have just, a few minutes ago, come across the reference to the memorial inside the church to Richard Pomery who died in 1744.
That would be very interesting to see.
I see it's 'in the North Aisle', so shouldn't be too difficult to find.

The Dangar ones inside the church are too recent, so son't worry about those.

Perhaps the tomb with William Dangar  1789 is the same one as I posted above? There do seem to be a lot of people in it!

Added:
Just checking this site - https://sites.google.com/site/pomeroytwigs2/, which has a wealth of information about Pomery people. (there were hundreds of them in Devon and Cornwall!).
It says there is also a floor slab at St Neot in the north aisle to a Thomas Pomery who died in 1750.
Oh dear, this is turning into 'quite a mission' as my daughter would say!  ;)

I visited Saint Cleer today and found the tomb of Joseph / John Pomery, but it was illegible due to 236 years of weathering. The only words i could make out was:
Mary Pomery their pious daughter who departed this life on the 7th day of September 1700/1800
aged 4... years.
Saint Neots to follow.
