Birth in Ireland
« on: Monday 12 September 05 11:17 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm trying to find the birth of my great grandfather, John McIlduff, he was born about 1865 in (I think) Portadown, Armagh.  He married in 1885 in the RC chapel of Portadown.  I've written to the GRO but they can find no record of his birth and I'm unsure what to do next, can anyone give me any advice ?
thanks in advance

Did GRO find any McIlduff entries for you either side of 1865, as there appears to have been a John born in 1860 and others in 1868 and 1870? Perhaps you have ruled these out already. From the year you have given, I am assuming he married Ellen McBride. If GRO did not indicate any of the three John's I have mentioned, it may be worth asking them to check again (especially ensure they are using correct spelling).

Hi,

Birth registered 1864-66 or so are in the IGI. So if he's not in there either the year is wrong or they didn't register him ( there was an amount of non-compliance) So check his age again in the 1901 census. Where was he then?

Hi Kate and Scotmum

Thanks for the replies.  The GRO said they could find no births for John McIlduff 2 years either side of 1865.  On the 1901 census he was aged 37 making his birth year c1864.
BUT I have just got his death certificate and he died in 1928 aged 67 so that puts his birth c1861 so I think the next thing to do is see if the birth you mentioned (Scotmum) in 1861 could be my John.  I think I might know who his parents are but I need to confirm this.

Many thanks again
