Dorset Family History Society will be hosting a meeting at St George's Church Hall, Darby’s Lane, Oakdale, POOLE, Dorset, BH15 3EU with a talk by VALERIE BRENTON entitled ‘SAY MY NAME: A RESEARCH JOURNEY FROM DORSET TO THE PLANTATIONS OF JAMAICA’.
Discovery of an old and dirty parchment started a qualitative research journey which allowed a small glimpse into the lives of multi generations of slaves and their owners on the Mount Carmel Plantation, Jamaica, in the early 19th Century. This was a time of social and economic change for plantation owners as Jamaica, along with other colonies, was being forced to comply with the 1807 Abolition of Slavery Act. The role of the Church, a mainstay of most genealogical research in Britain, had a very different role in Jamaica which this talk will highlight as part of telling the story of an, at times very emotional, journey into the lives of complete strangers.
After a strong interest in family history for many years Valerie Brenton is now a full time genealogist, a Post Graduate MSc in Genealogical, Palaeographic and Heraldic studies and a member of AGRA. The name of her Broadstone business – Penguin Genealogy – reflects Valerie’s personal history and a connection with the South Atlantic.
